Con man Victor Lustig made history when he impersonated a French government offic
in an attempt to sell the Eiffel Tower. In 1925, Lustig traveled to Paris, where he sent
meeting invitations to scrap metal dealers on counterfeit French government stationery.
He told the businessmen that the Eiffel Tower was structurally unsound and had to be
torn down, and that he would sell the fallen landmark to whoever offered him the most
money. Falling for Lustig's trick, the credulous dealers showered him with offers. As soon
as Lustig received the money, he fled the country.
