The administration of medication is a key element in most patient treatment plans. The process begins with a doctor or other health care provider examining the patient, making a diagnosis, and then writing a prescription for medication. The prescription is then taken to a pharmacist who dispenses the medication and then finally, a nurse (or the patient themselves) administers the medication. While medication errors can occur at any point in the process, administration is a point at which a large percentage of dosing errors occur. What role can a nurse play in ensuring that a correct dose of medication is administered?
