The atoms in a chemical reaction are responsible for the energy. The atoms are the smallest particle which composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons that is why this is responsible for energy since they are needed in the chemical reaction.
Mass is something that can be converted into energy according to the Eisenstein formula. So if there is no mass there is no energy. Similarly the mass of atoms makes them matter as we say that matter is something having mass and occupy space. In the same way temperature is also a quantity which is produced by collision of atoms. In short mass of matter is responsible for energy, temperature and explosion.
