The Industrial Revolution is the first answer. A specific reason is Eli Whitney (He's probably the most important American inventor during the 1800's. Eli Whitney and the cotton gin which allowed the mass production of cotton which allowed the mass production of textiles which then allowed for the mass production of clothing. Another reason is Slater, I think was his name, brought over a factory design from England and used it to build up his own textile factory.
