1- Because she couldn´t speak well, whenever she tried she just started stammering and she couldn´t get the words right.
2-Also everyone in the village that knew her thought of her as a simpleton and this discouraged her to try and speak to anyone.
This happens a lot when one person is different from the rest, people get annoyed and tend to take violent measures, either by physical abuse or psychological by ignoring that person and making them feel unwanted.
