Answer: "And so, long after we had left, my parents were still living in the dictatorship inside their own heads."
Julia Alvarez tells about long time habits of repression and terror developed by her parents and other Dominicans. Due to a constant censorship during all their lives under a dictatorship, they found very difficult to get rid of this nightmare, even after being in a safe environment, in a place with law protecting their right express themselves, because the internal reality was still present.
The lasting effects of injustice are not easy to correct. This is some evidence from the text:
- "....my parents were still living in the dictatorship inside their own heads..." . The use of still shows the parents could not feel the difference bewteen living in the Dominican Republic or in the US.
