If papyrus couldn't last a long time in Egypt's dry environment, how would that have affected our understanding of ancient Egyptian society?

If that would've happened then our understanding of Egypt society would change a little leaving all of us confused about what they may have used instead of their dry sand paper, Papyrus and we wouldn't really know. I hope this helps.
