Being the king of mount Olympus, Zeus needed a wife. So he chose the goddess that first helped him trick Cronus (Metis). When Metis became pregnant, Zeus became nervous and swallowed her and the unborn child whole. But turns out that it was a daughter. This daughter was known as Athena.
