Physical appearance or morphology are not always useful for the identification of organisms belonging to the same species but behavioral characteristics can also be used to identify organisms belonging to the same species.
- The morphological species concept is dependent on the morphological data. It relies on the groups of physical traits for identification of species.
- The biological species concept is dependent on the behavioral data. It suggests that due to differences in behavior the organisms of the same species or different species do not copulate this brings about reproductive isolation.
- The members of the two distinct species may look alike but do not interbreed with each other as they are distinct in behavior.
- For example, Eastern meadowlarks and Western meadowlarks are bird species that look identical, yet do not interbreed with each other due to differences in behavior.
- In case of human species the physical appearance or morphology can be found similar but it cannot be used for identifying these organisms instead these are characterized by their behavior and actions.
- These organisms are capable of interbreeding but they will not in some conditions because of differences in race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographical separation between mates and others.
