So we have two cases here,

First case: (positive value).
4x – 8 = 9x + 2
Re arranging the equation:
9x-4x = -8-2
5x = -10
x = –2
Second case: (negative value).
–(4x – 8) = 9x + 2
–4x + 8 = 9x + 2
Re arranging the equation.
6 = 13x
x = 6/13
