You may be unaware that the Philippines were part once a U.S territory. It was ceded to the U.S from Spain in the same treaty which ceded in Guam. After the conclusion of the Spanish war The Filipino forces that were fighting Spain for independence turned their attention on the Americans. It turned out that the U.S Wasn't very good at being colonial power. A former colony herself. after 40 years the Philippines won their independence. It would have been sooner if not for WWII.
