Most like D. since certain setting's can be different and have different tone, the most overused setting explanatory is " It was a dark and stormy night". You may or may not be familiar with this but it's used in most horror stories and a few  non horror stories, however just by reading that line people can imagine a huge chunk of the character's setting and it set's the mood/ tone gloomy is mostly used to describe a dark setting. When a narrator describes  the setting more in depth by saying "it was dark and stormy night, and a tall castle was standing atop a mountain  as if looking down on the people living below it." That would make the character know  that it was a  scary place and prepare the reader for a terrifying story ahead of them.
