In Ngugi Wa Thiong'o's "The Return," Kamau expected to receive a hero's welcome as a Mau Mau fighter who survived the revolution and five years in prison.

Kamau survived all the ordeals of the war and imprisonment, but the most important relationship with his wife did not survive his absence.

Kamau had joined the Mau Mau movement to fight for Kenya's independence. He left his newly betrothed wife, who was pregnant, to join the rebellion against British rule. Since his whereabouts remained unknown for five years, the wife remarried.

Thus, on his return, Kamau rightly expected to receive a hero's welcome, especially from his wife and family, but this was not to be.  Things have changed.
