Your story should show how you can manipulate the elements of a Gothic story. As it is not possible to have access to your knowledge, I cannot write the answer for you, but I will show you how to do it.
What are the main characteristics of Gothic literature?
- Dark and mysterious atmosphere.
- Psychologically unstable characters.
- Narrative focused on horror or terror.
- References to death and human suffering.
- Supernatural elements.
The main purpose of Gothic literature is to make the reader feel horrified, uncomfortable, and unstable. This is done through sensory descriptions that are descriptions of people, things, and any other element, done so thoroughly as to make the reader feel what is being described.
In this case, you must be very descriptive in your short story, especially in describing sensations such as chills, fear, cold and dread, for example.
To write your story, you must follow the following sequence:
- Exposition: Introduce the characters and setting of the story.
- Rising Action: Begin introducing the mystery of the story, showing how the characters are affected, and allowing the tension to build up gradually.
- Climax: Show the mystery of the story by establishing and being fought or fighting the characters. Make the narrative as tense as possible.
- Falling Action: Show how the mystery was solved and lower the story tension.
- Resolution: Show how the characters went about their lives after becoming involved with the mystery of the story.
Below you can see an example of how to introduce your short story:
The city of Cindelo contained one of the greatest mysteries of the region. In the center of the city, in the old mansion of the Maltas, there were screams and the rumbling of wood, every Friday. The residents of the city could not explain what was happening in the place and had no answer from old Malta, the only resident of the mansion, who was a grouchy gentleman of few words. The mysteries surrounding the residence matched the frigid weather and snow-covered scenery brought on by winter.
