We can also infer that the characters live under extreme religiosity and with well-defined gender roles.

Based on this, we can answer the following questions as follows:

  1. The city was peaceful because the residents did not have many activities outside the usual and culturally correct and it was composed of white people of European descent, which limited diversity.
  2. The region lived under the Puritan religion that was very rigidly established and determined the local gender roles, causing women to be limited to domestic services and the care of children and husbands, while men had to provide a home and economic stability, being the heads of the family.
  3. Some unfamiliar words that we can mention are "besom" which means "broom" and "laudable" which means "worthy of praise."

What is "The scarlet letter?"

The book portrays how Puritan communities dealt with adultery and how there were discrepancies between punishments and social standing between an adulterous woman and an adulterous man. In this way, the book highlights the lack of critical thinking and the injustices related to the genres that the excess of religiosity promotes.
