What is tetanus antitoxin?
Tetanus antitoxin is administered as preventative medicine to those who are at risk for developing infected wounds, wounds contaminated with mud or dirt, deep or punctured wounds, and wounds with tissue damage that is devitalizing. As soon as the wound is received, 1,500 IU should be administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly.
Antibodies are produced by tetanus antitoxin and immediately grant passive immunity. Antibody production is not stimulated by antitoxin. It offers immunity, but it's passive, not active. By definition, passive immunity is not a permanent defense.
