The term “molecular” mass cannot be used for ionic compounds because they do not consist of discrete molecular units  , instead the term Emperical formula mass is used.

  • Molecular mass is the mass of a molecule that is equal to the sum of atomic masses of all the atoms contained in the molecule. Example- molecular mass of Water( H2O)=2x1+16=18u
  • Emperical formula mass of a substance is the sum atomic masses of
    constituent atoms in an ionic compounds.Ionic compounds which do not contain discrete molecules, but ions as their constituent units.
