One of the first theories of aggression is the idea of the frustration-aggression relationship. In 1939, a team of Yale psychologists made the initial suggestion. The theory of aggressiveness known as the frustration-aggression-displacement theory was first put forth by John Dollard, Neal Miller, Leonard Doob, Orval Mowrer, and Robert Sears in 1939.
Neal Miller further expanded the idea in 1941 and Leonard Berkowitz in 1969. In its original form, the theory offered two striking assertions: (1) Violence is always accompanied by frustration, and (2) Frustration is always the precursor to aggression. According to the frustration-aggression theory, aggressiveness is frequently a result of frustration.
