The bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the source of the infection known as diphtheria. However, in severe outbreaks, more than 10% of persons who are diagnosed with the disease may pass away. Most infections are asymptomatic or have a minor clinical course. Mild to severe signs and symptoms may appear, and they typically appear two to five days after exposure. Typically, symptoms develop gradually and start with a fever and sore throat. In severe situations, the neck may acquire a grey or white area. This may do so, obstruct the airway, and cause croup-like barking coughing. A portion of the neck swelling may be brought on by swollen lymph nodes. There is also a type of diphtheria that affects the skin, eyes, or genitalia.
