Baleen whales consume zooplankton, comprised of copepods, krill, and other small fish and crustaceans. The most massive species favor krill. Schooling fish or krill can be consumed by smaller kinds of whales like humpback, Bryde's, or minke whales. Most baleen whales have an annual cycle of feasting and starvation, not eating all year long. They typically only consume for around 100 days a year, mostly during the breeding season in the summer. The blue whale would eat about 1,600 tones a year if it consumed 16 tones daily.
