the volume of rectangular prism is V= L xWxH
each of the 42 cubes has a volume v= 1x1x1=1 inch^3

1 cube -----------------> 1 inches^3
 42cubes---------------> 42inches ^3
so the volume of prism is 7 x 42=  429 inches^3

 7 layers -------------------> 7 x 42=  429 inches^3
