1.When the football is initially thrown the ball starts with the max kinetic and over the time it loses the kinetic and gains the potential until the kinetic loses all of its energy and is at the maximum height and as it starts falling then the foot ball gains kinetic , it goes back to the max kinetic if it is level ground and loses potential.
2. I believe is called mechanical energy or total energy.
