When Prometheus first made man, he gave them knowledge of the future and men saw suffering, disease and death. So he stripped them of this knowledge and filled their hearts with a blind hope and they were gay and merry. He then gathered up sorrow, pain, fear and other things that would harm man and placed them in a box. He gave that box eventually to brother Epimetheus for safekeeping. So Zeus, trying to get back at Prometheus for taking fire from Mount Olympus and giving it to humans, ordered Hephaistos to build a women and to give that women, named Pandora or all gifts, to Epimetheus. Epimetheus wedded her and shortly after, while Epimetheus wasn't looking, Pandora opened the box which contained human suffering and let it loose upon the world.
