Why was Stalingrad a key target of the Nazis? It was named to honor Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. It linked the Soviet oil fields to the rest of the country.  It was close to the border of German-controlled Poland. It was an agricultural community and could supply food.

Stalingrad was a key target of the Nazis because it linked the Soviet oil fields to the rest of the country. Control over Stalingrad would have allowed the Nazis to cut off vital oil supplies to the Soviet Union, severely weakening its military and industrial capabilities.
