The fundamental structure of the membrane is the PHOSPHOLIPID BILAYER. The membrane also contain some amount of proteins. The phospholipid bilayer of the membrane forms a stable barrier between aqueous compartments.
The proteins, which are embedded in the phospholipid bilayers carry out specific function of the cell membrane.
