Read the excerpt from "An Indian's View of Indian Affairs." My father was chief before me. When a young man, he was called Joseph by Mr. Spaulding, a missionary. He died a few years ago. He left a good name on earth. He advised me well for my people. Chief Joseph is proud of its roots and the high values and culture that his father taught him, the indian ways are those of respect for all living things, respect for the planet earth and the human being, everyone is a brother, and we should treat everyone with respect and love.

The tradition or culture of an area is the total way of life of the people that are in the area. It includes their lifestyles, clothings, ceremonies, etc.
